Today Jesus teaches his disciples how to pray. It is a prayer most of us learned when we were small children. The problem is that we know the Our Father so well, we can rattle off the words without really having to think about what we are saying. The message of the prayer is so important and one our world needs to hear today. In this prayer Jesus says, “If you forgive others their transgressions, your Heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”
In Cursillo we say, “Prayer doesn’t change things. Prayer changes people and people change things!” Prayer changes us by putting us in contact with God. We can’t solve all our problems or the world’s problems as well without acknowledging the need of God’s power and goodness. This realization softens our hearts so we become more open to receive his mercy and grace.
The effects of our prayer does not stop with us. It can even change the course of history. Through our prayer, Jesus is inviting us to cooperate with him in accomplishing his will in the world. We are opening our hearts AND our circumstances to our loving and forgiving Father by yielding to his plan.
