Spiritual Daily Communion for 8/17
To say that less may be more is not a popular phrase today. We in our society today have too much “stuff” and that stuff can be an obstacle to grace as I alway say on Cursillo. Some people trace today’s “possession obsession” to the heavy emphasis on materialism that developed after WW II.
If you are as old as I, your house as a child may have had a very small closet space. Compare that with today’s walk-in closets. And yet we still run out of storage space to keep all our “stuff “. As a kid we had a very small one car garage. When you opened the doors you hit the garage walls. Today we complain if our house does not have a three-car garage. The Hoover Era dream was a chicken in every pot. Today the expectation is a large screen TV in every room ! To support this consumption habit, Americans work longer hours than most countries in order to maintain this standard of living and to acquire more and more “stuff “.
That’s why Jesus tells us today that it will be hard for the rich to enter the Kingdom of heaven. Is It time for us to choose to return to a simpler life-style ? Should I seriously examine how I spent my time and treasure and consider cutting out the non-essentials? Should I consider discarding what I don’t really need and give my excess to the poor ? Does all this “stuff” keep me from following the real desire of my heart, which is Jesus ?
St. Joseph, pray for us !
