The wise virgins in our Gospel today were creative, astute and enterprising. They brought extra oil for their lamps. The foolish virgins did not, so when they ran low and had to buy more oil, they missed their chance to attend the wedding feast. I often ponder as to why the wise virgins didn’t give some oil to the foolish ones in Jesus’ story. It seems unchristian for them not to help the others.
Perhaps Jesus is telling us that we have to use practical judgement and common sense in living out our life in grace. I don’t always do that. Sometimes I leave to chance the fulfillment of my Religious goals. I figure good intentions are enough. I don’t take the time or the practical steps along the way to make those goals a reality in my life.
Through my baptism I’m called to a different way of life. That life in grace will not just come about without planning and effort on my part. I have to daily decide to use my time, talent and treasure I have been given in a creative, astute, and enterprising way in order to be prepared to meet the Bridegroom – Jesus Christ – when he comes into my life.
How am I doing ?
St. Joseph, pray for us !
