When Jesus began his ministry he chose twelve men to be his friends and apostles. I like to think of them as his “groupies”. I’m sure they spent time each week talking about their piety, study and action.
In his choice of the twelve, we see a characteristic of how God works. Jesus chose very ordinary people. They were non-professionals who had no wealth or position. They were chosen from common people who did ordinary things. They had no special education or social advantage. Jesus wanted ordinary people who could take an assignment and do it extraordinarily well. He chose them not for who they were, but for whom they could become.
When the Lord calls us to serve, we should therefore not be hesitant or fearful, thinking we have little to offer. We should remember that the Lord uses ordinary people, like us, and uses our gifts and talents to draw people closer to himself. Is there anything holding you back from giving yourself unreservedly to God ? You may be ordinary, but you are very “special” to God !
St. Joseph, pray for us !
