In today’s Gospel Luke 6:39-42, Jesus chastised his disciples saying, “Why do you notice a splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own”. He uses this exaggerated comparison of a splinter and a beam to make a point. Why are they pointing out little things in their brothers, when they aren’t even aware of major things of their own?

Jesus calls them hypocrites and tells his disciples to remove the beam from their own eyes first, before they try to remove the splinter from their brother’s eye. Before his disciples worry about others, then need to examine their lives. If we have things in our lives that impair our ability to help others, then we need to work on them first, or we will never be the servant Christ needs us to be. I know I have plenty of wood in my eyes that I need to worry about first!

Today’s Gospel may cause us to examine our lives and determine if there is anything that impairs our ability to help others. What are we doing to remove these impairments?
