It’s really hard to comprehend the sorrow Mary must have felt seeing her son beaten and then brutally crucified. It’s something no mother should have to endure. Yet during her life she had to deal with much sorrow and pain. When she found out she was pregnant, she had to wonder if Joseph would divorce her. Then she gave birth in a cave used to shelter animals. Following this she had to flee with her baby to Egypt where she knew no one. She became a widow at an early age. So Mary was no stranger to sorrow.

I would say in my experience that all mothers I have known have had their share of sorrow in their lives. Sorrow from divorce, death of a spouse, death of a child, addicted children, or children making other very bad choices. Being a mother brings its share of suffering and sorrow.

Yesterday we celebrated the Exultation of the Cross. Somehow Mary knew that her son’s death on the cross was not the end. Even as she grieved, she continued to trust in this God of love who would turn her sorrow into joy. So it should be with us. Jesus came to show us how to live life to fullness. Yet He never said that this would be free from pain and sorrow.

Hang in there and never quit praying !
The best is yet to come !

St. Joseph, pray for us !
