In Jesus’ time, tax collectors were considered traitors since they were working for the Romans. The ordinary Jews would never be caught even talking to a tax collector. So Jesus does the unthinkable and asks Matthew to follow him. Even more remarkable, Matthew gets up and follows him, no questions asked, no contract, no conditions. What beautiful simplicity !

When we hear this story, we need to ask ourselves, do we simply follow Christ with no conditions and no reservations ? Are we more like Matthew or like the Pharisees who complained because Jesus ate with them and associated with tax collectors. In their own words, a tax collector was a sinner. How could Jesus do this ?

Jesus puts everything in perspective when he says those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. He says to go and learn the meaning of the words, “ I desire mercy and not sacrifice.” Once again Jesus invites us to elevate our thought to a supernatural plain, not to think as the world thinks but as God sees things. To go beyond just going through the motions of a superficial Catholic. Rather we must love as Jesus loves and show mercy as Jesus shows mercy. It’s hard, but with the gift of grace, we can do it !

St. Joseph, pray for us !
