Today we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. We commemorate the naval victory of the Christian Fleet over the Muslims at Lepanto. This victory was attributed to the praying of the rosary asking for Mother Mary’s intervention.
Our Gospel asks us what we would do in the middle of the night if one of our friends wakes us up asking to borrow some bread. Most of us would not be very pleased ! Yet I remember one night at 2:00 am when one of our homeless clients called me to rescue him, his wife and two babies from Skid Row in downtown LA. My first reaction was, “You’ve got to be kidding !” However I got up, drove to Skid Row (the scariest place I had ever seen) and literally rescued them. Later on my thought was, “Why did he trust that I would come and save him ?”
My question to you is, “Do you trust that God will come and save you ?” It’s like Jesus’ parable, where the sleepy-eyed man shares some bread because of his friend’s persistent knocking, not because he likes to be awakened at midnight. Jesus tells us to pray and never give up even when it seems that God is slow to answer the door. Never stop asking the Father for what we need. In the end he will rescue us and give us every good gift.
St. Joseph, pray for us !
Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us !
