In our Gospel today, Luke 14:1-6, Jesus finds himself on the Sabbath dining at the home of one of the leading Pharisees where they were observing him carefully. In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy, whom Jesus healed and dismissed. The Pharisees were indignant that Jesus healed him on the Sabbath.
The Pharisees followed the letter of the law, interpreting it in black and white. In their rigorous enforcement, they lost sight of God’s original intention. They missed the message Christ brought that love sums up the whole law.

Jesus gave us the reason behind the law. Not working on the Sabbath is an important way to honor God, but the law does not justify leaving someone to suffer unnecessarily. Loving acts of kindness and healing are always encouraged, Sabbath or not. As in our Gospel today, God would prefer mercy from us, rather than have us blindly adhere to laws, causing unnecessary harm to others.
