Our gospel today from Matthew 5:1-12, is from the famous Beatitudes declared by Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount. Jesus opens with “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”.

This statement is misunderstood by many. Poor in spirit doesn’t mean not having much faith, it means having an absolute dependence on God. This attitude is the opposite of being self-assured and feeling everything we have is because of our own doing. The poor in spirit recognize their own limitations and shortcomings and turn to God. The poor in spirit will enter the kingdom of God, not the proud and self-reliant.

Let us reflect on this Gospel today in our lives. Are we doing our own will, confident of our own abilities alone, or are we blessed because we have the humility to know everything we have comes from God? Are we proud in spirit, or poor in spirit? We know from our Gospel what will get us into the kingdom of God.
