Today Jesus told the crowd traveling with him that they must hate their mother and father, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even themselves if they are to follow him. That is pretty harsh language. In biblical times “to hate “ often meant to “prefer less”. Yet Jesus uses this strong language to make it very clear that nothing should prevent them from giving God priority in their lives.
 
Jesus tell us that God needs to be first in our lives because he has placed us first in his love for all creation. Our love for him should be a response to his exceeding love and mercy towards us. True love is costly because it holds nothing back.
 
Today take time to reflect upon how God has loved you. In what ways has he shown his unbounded love for you ? Sometimes his love flows through other people. Other times it comes as you sit quietly in prayer or ponder the beauty of creation. Many times it‘s when we hear God’s word at Mass. No matter how you experience God’s love, we must let it flow through us to affect others.
Think !! Is there someone you know who needs to feel God’s love today ?
