John the Baptist was sent to prepare the way for the Messiah. However, John didn’t receive any clear direction about his mission. No angel was sent to tell him what he was supposed to do. When Jesus came, John wasn’t even sure he was the right one. John sent messengers to ask Jesus if he was the one, or should they look for another.

John’s advice and preaching doesn’t seem all that new. He tells people to be good to their neighbors. He tells tax collectors to be fair and not extort people. He tells soldiers to be fair and happy with their salary. Nothing really earthshaking here.

John may have thought his life was unremarkable, yet Jesus said: “I tell you, there is no one born of woman greater than John.” We may also think our life is unremarkable. Yet our life’s accomplishments don’t necessarily correspond to the value of human life in God’s plan. Whatever we do to make him known, we are bringing about the kingdom of God by our actions. That’s what he wants of us this Advent.
