In our gospel today of Matthew 21:23-27, Jesus is approached by the temple elders, and they are not happy with him. They don’t like his teachings challenging their religious laws and practices. They don’t like his chasing the money changers out of the temple, and his healing on the Sabbath. They ask him who does he think he is, and who gave him the authority to do these things, trying to trip him up.
Jesus has the courage to stand up to them at the risk of getting arrested or even killed. He did this to stand up for all those who were oppressed and exploited by these elders. He did this to challenge their religions practices that excluded and hurt so many.
As I reflect on this Gospel, I think about who and what am I standing up for these days? Do I have enough courage to say something when I see others wronged, even at the face of ridicule or even harm?
Do I have the courage to call out practices in our society that oppress and exploit others? I’m afraid upon examination, I have a long way to go to have the heart and courage of Jesus!
