We have quite a wonderful scene in today’s Gospel as Jesus is presented in the Temple. We hear that an aged, holy man is talking to God as he looks into the face of this two month old child he is holding. The old man speaks of salvation and glory. Even his name, Simeon, in Hebrew means “God has heard“.
He says to God now that he had seen the child, “now you may let your servant go in peace”. This prayer is called the “Nunc Dimittis” in Latin and is part of the Church’s official night prayer.
What a great way to end each day. I go to bed entrusting myself into the hands of God.
You can use Simeon’s words or your own words such as: “Lord, as I go to sleep, I place myself in your hands.” What a great way to go to bed knowing I am in God’s hands.
Night prayer is an old tradition in our church.
Try it !!
