In our gospel today, John 1:1-18, we hear about the Word, who was God, became flesh.
God did this by bringing Jesus into our world, who demonstrated the Word in action. This was necessary to reconcile people to God. The Word became flesh through Jesus to show the infinite love and mercy of God for us.
The joy we celebrated on Christmas day is not just for the day. When the Word makes a home in us, it is an eternal joy that cannot be taken away from us, no matter what trials we are facing. There are many people in our world today who are struggling physically, emotionally and spiritually. In these last few years, many are suffering with issues such as finances, sickness and isolation in their families, and even have lost loved ones during these difficult times.
In my observation, the people that have these trials and live in sadness and fear, are people with little or no faith. The people that endure these same trials, but still have joy, are people that have a faith in Jesus. This gives them an invincible joy that no pain or sorrow can diminish.
At Christmas, we asked our loved ones what they want. Do we ever ask Jesus what he really wants?
What Jesus really wants is for us to let him make a home in our hearts.
Let us make that our new year’s resolution!
