I don’t know about you, but I don’t usually think of John the Baptist as a joyful person. He preached boldly and didn’t pull any punches. I usually think of him as a gruff person who seldom cracked a smile. Yet the Gospel today says he is joyful. In fact it says his joy is “complete”.

John sees his role as one who is to prepare the way for the Messiah. He comes on the scene before Jesus, listens for him, rejoices when he hears his voice, then steps aside. He says that he must decrease so that Jesus can increase. In all of this he is joyful.

So today all of us should take heart and rejoice. Like John the Baptist, we can rejoice that the Messiah has come and entered into our humanity. We can rejoice that we will see him when he comes again. And we can trust that in the end, like John the Baptist, he will make our joy complete.

Merry Christmas, DeColores, Deacon Doug
