When Jesus called his apostles to follow him, such as Levi in today’s gospel, he didn’t give them time to turn in a two weeks notice at work as they quit their jobs. When someone wanted to follow Jesus but needed to bury their father first, Jesus said, “Let the dead bury their dead ……. Come and follow me !”
Today we live in an “instant” society. We microwave our food and often pick up dinner from a drive-thru window. When we call someone on our cell phone, we are amazed if they don’t answer right away, even if they are in church. We expect an instant response in all things.
So the question is, “When Jesus calls, do we keep him waiting for an
answer ?” Are we ready, like the apostles, to drop everything and follow
him ? Or do we have a million and one excuses as to why NOW is not a good time.
Don’t keep the Lord waiting. “Now is the acceptable time.” (2Cor6:2)
