Today’s gospel reflects upon the first time the disciples have met Jesus following that horrible sequence of events when they failed miserably. During Jesus’ passion and death, the disciples were not at their finest. Judas betrayed him, Peter denied him three times, and the rest all ran and hid from the moment he was arrested. Today even Thomas didn’t believe he was alive.
When Jesus appeared to them, notice what he didn’t say. Words such as; “Where were all of you?” or “How could you have done such a thing?” or “I’m really disappointed in you !” Rather the first words out of his mouth were: “Peace be with you.”
What an example of Divine Mercy.
The disciples were probably expecting to be “chewed out”. What a relief it must have been when they heard Jesus’ words of peace. I know that despite my own failures, Jesus has words of peace for me as well. His divine mercy is always available to me. Today he says to all of us: “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”
