Today’s Gospel passage picks up right after the two disciples, on the road to Emmaus, were joined by Jesus, whom they didn’t recognize until the breaking of the bread. Remember that he then vanished from their sight. The two returned immediately to Jerusalem to tell the others what happened.
This is when Jesus appeared to all the disciples. They were astonished and thought is was a ghost. Jesus quickly assured them he is not a ghost and that he is as human now as he was before he died. To prove it, he eats with them.
Sometimes I may struggle with the belief in life after death because I can’t imagine what it will be like. It can, therefore, make a tremendous difference to know that the risen Jesus is still human. He is not a ghost or some misty figure of God. He is not just a memory. He is loving and he is human. We take hope in knowing that I am a disciple of a living, human Jesus and I hope to become like him on the day of final resurrection. My glorified body might even have hair !!
St. Joseph, pray for us !
