In our Gospel today from John 6:22-29, Jesus is chastising the crowds that followed him after the feeding of the 5000, saying “you are looking for me not because you saw signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled”

He is telling the crowd that they are following him for the wrong reasons. They should not be following him for the literal bread he offered them that only sustains them until the next meal. They should be following him because of all the things they have heard or seen him do, and know he is the Son of God. They should be seeking him as the bread of life, which will sustain them for all eternity.
Today, we can reflect on our own lives. Is our hunger and thirst for eternal life greater than our hunger and thirst for temporal food and drink? Are we like these followers, seeking things that are only temporary, or are we followers because of our faith in Jesus, and we are seeking eternal life? We know what Jesus desires from us!
