In our Gospel today from John 6:52-59, the Jews were quarreling among themselves because they were thinking literally; how can we eat his flesh and drink his blood, just as Nicodemus struggled with literally being born again. Jesus was giving a foreshadowing of the institution of the Eucharist at the last supper.
Jesus says “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of Man and drink his Blood, you do not have life within you”. This makes the Eucharist necessary for eternal life, for he goes on to say whoever does this, “I will raise him on the last day”.
Many people have shared with me recently that they haven’t been in a Church and haven’t received the Eucharist in over a year. As our Churches begin to open back up, let those of us who have been away believe Jesus’ words, and be drawn back to the Eucharist. Let us also invite people back with us that have been away. As Jesus assures us, he is the only way to eternal life!
