Since seven means complete or full, when Jesus says we must forgive seventy times seven times, he means there is no limit to giving or receiving forgiveness. That is how our Father God forgives us, completely and without end. In fact we have been forgiven an enormous debt we could never repay on our own. That is why the Father sent his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, who freely gave up his life for our salvation. We owe God an incredible debt of gratitude for the mercy and grace he has shown us.
We also know that since God had shown us his mercy by granting us pardon for our sins, then we also must show mercy and forgiveness to every person who has offended us. This is where being a follower or traveller with Christ gets to be hard. If we expect God to forgive us and show us his mercy, then we must be ready to let go of any resentment or grievance we feel towards our neighbor.
We must be ready to forgive others from the heart as God had forgiven us us. Do you hold a grudge or resentment against anyone in your heart today ? Then ask God for the grace to forgive them. Maya Angelou once said; “Forgiveness is the greatest gift we can give ourselves!”
St. Joseph, pray for us !
