Our world today needs witnesses more than it need teachers. It’s easier to remind people how to live the Christian life than it is to give witness by living an authentic Christian life. In today’s language, we say you have to “walk the talk”. Jesus confronts the Pharisees over just this issue in today’s gospel.

Our following the truth should not depend on whether others are living it, but on us. We must proclaim it by our own personal witness and life. And, if we are in a position of preaching or teaching, we should sincerely and humbly try to live up to the doctrine we proclaim. After all, it’s not our message but God’s.

It’s all a matter of being humble. The prophet Mica says we should walk humbly with our God in everything we do. We are not here to widen our phylacteries or seek seats of honor. Jesus says; “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Only the humble can truly be in contact with God and let God’s grace work through them.
