Today’s Gospel story is one of the most gruesome in all of the Bible with the beheading of John the Baptist and then bringing the head in on a platter. Actually Herod could have killed him at anytime but he enjoyed listening to him. There was something about John that attracted him, but also scared him. John’s passion for holiness and his moral courage to speak for truth and goodness stirred up something deep in Herod’s soul.
You may not consider yourself like John the Baptist, but in one sense you are like him if you too have a desire to let people know about God’s mercy and love. Perhaps you too have a passion for holiness that gets people’s attention. Maybe your sense of peace helps others stay calm in a crisis. Or maybe your joy overflows and lifts the spirits of your loved ones. You have spiritual gifts that God needs in our world today.
Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see the impact you are making in people’s lives. Trust that the Holy Spirit will use the example of your faith to have an impact on the world around you and may touch others with your love !
Remember to keep your head about you !
