Today’s Gospel of Mark 9:2-10 is the story of the transfiguration, or the change.  Jesus took Peter, James and John up the mountain to show them who he really was, and how it was going to be. They had a mountaintop experience with Jesus, an encounter with God. Jesus’s face changed and his clothes became brilliant white. Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus and tell about what awaits him in Jerusalem. Jesus wanted them to see him differently than how they pictured the Messiah.
Jesus wasn’t the only one transformed on that mountain, so were the apostles, Peter, James and John. We are challenged to look at our relationship with Jesus. Do we see Jesus as what we want him to be, or can we see him as he really is?
So what does this all mean for us today? If we haven’t actually seen Jesus, maybe it’s time to have a closer encounter with him. I had that mountaintop encounter with Jesus on my Cursillo. I saw him in a whole new light that weekend.  Not the Jesus of my imagination, but as he really is, and it transformed my life.
