There is a great hunger and thirst in our society today for peace and fulfillment. Jesus tells us how we can satisfy that hunger by feeding on his body and blood. However very few people hear this message, or if they do hear it, don’t believe what he is telling them. This passage makes it clear that not only is faith a gift, but to believe one must have a certain disposition of heart. Those who murmured against Jesus closed themselves off to the gift of faith.
For us we need to be less sure of ourselves and more dependent on what God is saying to us in order to receive this gift of faith. Politicians today have that problem of only trusting in their ability and not trusting in God. Through faith in the Eucharist, we enter into a new life that is totally different to life in the world which seeks only pleasure and comfort within material confines. Only in God do we find true fulfillment and peace.
When I ask Catholics if they want to go to heaven, they all say yes. When I ask them if they are ready to die, I get a different response. Let us die to self then and hunger for the truth that came down from heaven.
