In our Gospel today from Matthew 17:22-24, Jesus explains to his disciples that he will be handed over to men and they will kill him, and he will be raised up on the third day. To this news, his disciples were overcome with grief. The news of his impending death was more than the disciples could bear. They didn’t comprehend the part about his resurrection and his promise of eternal life after death for his followers.
A lot of us have had to face death of loved ones in our lives. It is easy to succumb to grief in these trials. It is much harder to focus on their lives after their time on earth. We lost both of my parents in the last five years. Focusing on where my parents were going, after their lives well lived on earth for Christ, is what helped me through these hard times.
As we reflect on our own lives, are we only focused on our lives and the lives of others here on earth, or are we setting our sights much higher? Let us be the resurrection people of our faith. Jesus promised those who follow him on earth that he will prepare a place for them in his Father’s house. Let’s let the promise of eternal life give us an invincible joy, no matter what we endure on earth!
