Well Advent is nearly half over. Am I still trying to draw ever closer to Christ or has my shopping and other activities taken control ? Perhaps reflecting on Jesus would be easier if I knew more about his early life and childhood. The gospel writers mostly tell me only about the last years of his life.

What was Jesus like ? Was he tall, or short, thin or heavy ? Did he laugh a
lot ? Did he have a good singing voice ? Was there a twinkle in his eye ? The evangelists don’t get into this. They want me to know who Jesus is, not what he looked like.

Yet there is one human characteristic they do stress; he was compassionate. On eight different occasions they describe him as having pity. On two occasions they tell us he wept, once at the death of his good friend Lazarus, and also over the city of Jerusalem. At his birth he truly became one of us and human in all ways, yet divine. That really helps me to ponder and keep in mind during my quiet time this Advent. Please spend some “quiet “ time with him ! Get to know him !
