Today is the Third Sunday of Advent or Gaudete Sunday. It is the day we light the pink candle on our Advent Wreath. It’s a day for rejoicing because the birth of Jesus is near. John the Baptist tells the people of his day to rejoice also because, “…. there is one among you whom you do not recognize, ….. whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie”. Do we recognize him ?

Sometime in the hustle of our Christmas preparation, sometimes in dealing with family issues or marital problems, or in our worries about the future, it seems hard to sense his presence. Even in grieving the loss of a loved one, he is with us. Therefore we need to rejoice because he is near. We need to call upon the Holy Spirit because he is the one who opens our eyes to see that Jesus is near.

Jesus isn’t hiding from us. He gave us his Spirit so that we can feel his presence, and that’s reason to rejoice !
