Jesus tells us a story today about two sons. The one said no to his father but later changed his mind and obeyed him. This son highlights the way of Jesus who wants total conversion in our lives. Jesus was trying to make a point to the religious leaders that they too needed a change of heart. They rejected John the Baptist and now they were rejecting him. What Jesus wanted for the religious leaders of Jerusalem, he also wants for us.

Then there is the second son who said yes to the father but didn’t follow through. In many ways we are more like the second son in this parable. We intend to follow him, but in the end we get so busy with other things of the world, we fall short. Following Jesus should be for us the single most important thing I do in my life. God invites me to work in his vineyard not as a servant but as his son or daughter.

So ask yourself: how am I doing in serving the Lord ? In what ways am I saying yes, even if I initially resisted God ? What are the areas of my life that my lips say “yes” but my actions and behavior actually say “no” ? What are those addictions, failed relationships, anger, pride or prejudging that get in the way of my saying yes ?

This advent let us spend some time looking at the areas of my life where I resist God’s invitation. Finally let us ask God for the grace to help us say yes and embrace his will, even if sometimes it feels like a burden.
