Do you know who your ancestors were or where they came from? Many people today use Ancestry.com or another tool to trace their past. Genealogies are very important to many. They give us our roots and help us understand our heritage. Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus traces his lineage from Abraham through the line of David, King of Israel. Matthew shows that God, in his mercy, sent a savior as he promised in the lineage of Abraham and David to rule over Israel and free them from their enemies.

Jesus then is the fulfillment of God’s promises. He is the savior of the world who redeems us from the slavery of sin and makes us citizens in the Kingdom of God. Do we recognize our spiritual genealogy in him ?

Biblical history has shown us that God doesn’t call the bravest or the strongest or even the holiest people to fulfill his plan. He chooses ordinary sinful people. And so Jesus was born into an imperfect line. God redeemed a line of misfits and used this family as an important part of his plan. He is ready to do the same for us. So let’s use the rest of Advent to ask him to show us his plans for us. Does he want you to bring Christ to someone in your life ? Trust in him for nothing is impossible for God !
