In today’s Gospel, Matthew 7:21-27, we hear Jesus say, “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who builds his house on rock”. When the rains fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house, it withheld.

These words of his are his teachings in the sermon on the mount. The foundation of a life in grace will withstand the storms and trials of life. Prophets used the image of storms to represent God’s final judgement, so Jesus is telling them that if they take his words to heart and follow them, they will withstand God’s final judgement.

Today’s Gospel may cause us to reflect on our lives. What kind of foundation are we building our life on? Are we taking his words to heart, so we can withstand the trials of life? Or is our life’s foundation built on shaky ground, that will collapse when the storms come? How well will our house stand in the final judgement?
