In our Gospel today, Luke 3:1-6, we hear the word of God came to John, the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth. John, as prophesized by Isaiah, is “a voice crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the lord”. John heeded God’s call and began his mission, travelling throughout the whole region of the Jordan. He would be known as John the Baptist, preaching a Baptism for repentance and forgiveness of sins.
How does this scripture relate to our lives today? When we were baptized, we became priest, prophet, and king. What mission has God given to us? How did he make us aware of our call?
For some people, the call came while they were young, and they have always known their mission from God. Some of us, like myself, the call came later in life. Perhaps for some the call was revealed on their Cursillo weekend.
Let us reflect on this scripture in our lives. Are we crying out in the wilderness of this world, preparing the way for Jesus? Do we have the boldness and conviction to speak the truth in the face of ridicule and even at the risk of our lives, like John? Are we giving God enough of our time to hear his call?
