In Mark’s Gospel we see Jesus continuing his ministry of healing up in Tyre, which today is in Lebanon. What a gift it must have been for the woman in today’s story to have her daughter healed of unclean spirits.
Yet whenever I open myself up and ask God to heal me or make me whole, God’s response to me is also a gift. When I open my ears to hear God’s word and let it speak to me, again it comes to me as a gift. I don’t have to pay for it. Rather I need to embrace these gifts that are tailor-made just for me.
At Baptism, I receive the gift of a new life that never dies. In receiving the Eucharist, I receive the most incredible gift in the world, something I could never pay for. In Confession to have my sins forgiven, I could never earn this gift. God has given me ALL these Sacramental gifts. Because of them, I am the richest person in the world. Because of these gifts, I am part of the Lord’s community of disciples.
