In our gospel today, Mark 6:14-29, we hear about the end of John the Baptist. John was not afraid to speak the truth, telling Herod that it was not lawful to marry his brother’s wife Herodias. This earned him the wrath of Herodias, and she eventually had him beheaded.

What a faith John had in Jesus. He leapt in Elizabeth’s womb when Mary came near with Jesus in her womb. John never had the benefit of knowing that Jesus would be crucified and rise from the dead like we have, since he was killed before this happened. John knew Jesus was the Messiah, and always pointed to him, never to himself. John had the courage to cry out in the wilderness, and speak the truth, even though it could get him killed.

So what does this Gospel message mean to us today in our lives? Do we have the faith and courage of John?  Are we speaking the truth, even if the world receives the message with hostility, and tries to “cancel” us, or are we watering it down so not to offend anyone? Jesus was all about mercy and peace, but wasn’t afraid to turn over the tables in the temple when things were not right. I pray for the grace, wisdom, and courage to know the appropriate response to those I encounter in my life!
