The Pharisees complained that Jesus disciple ate their meals without carefully washing their hands as prescribed to them in the Mosaic Law. Jesus says they have set aside the commandments of God in order to uphold their traditions.
Jesus specifically accuses them of two things. First of hypocrisy. Like actors, who put on a show, they appear to obey God’s word while secretly they are following their own hidden agenda and intentions. Second, he accuses them of abandoning God’s word substituting their own interpretation of what God requires. Jesus explains that they void God’s commandments allowing their hearts and minds to be clouded by their own notion of religion.
Jesus tells us it can’t be that way with us. We can’t profess him with our lips, but do something contrary with our actions. People may not remember what we say, but they will remember what we do. So be the face of Christ by “walking the talk”!
