Jesus is continuing to struggle with the Pharisees over adherence to the law. The law for the Jews was to help them live a good life as God intended, but sometimes you can get stuck in the law.
This can also be true for us today. I remember as a kid the old Church law about not eating or drinking after midnight if you were going to receive Communion the next morning. I remember brushing my teeth and hoping I didn’t swallow a little bit of water so I could have Communion. It can be a real terror for a little kid. The law that was supposed to help people prepare to receive the Body of Christ became an obsession for many people. It also prevented many from going to communion in those days.
Laws are helpful, but I always need to remember why we had that law and what it was intended to do. The way I need to measure my life is by taking a look at whether I live the loving compassion of Jesus. Today Jesus says, “It doesn’t matter what goes into a person. What matters is what comes out of a person.”
