In our gospel today, Mark 1:14-20, Jesus is walking along the Sea of Galilee where he sees Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John, where he calls them to “come after me, and I will make you fishers of men”. They all immediately left everything behind to follow Jesus. Jesus invited them to discipleship and to help him on his mission.
Jesus calls everyone of us to some level of discipleship. This call always implies leaving something behind for the sake of something greater. For many of us, the problem is we don’t hear the call because we are so busy and have too much noise in our lives.
If we don’t hear or feel God’s call, could it be we are not giving God enough of our undivided attention? According to research, the average American spends over 7 hours per day on TV, computers, and/or phones. Perhaps the first step for us is to do some fasting from all the “screens” in our life, and give God a few moments of quiet time each day to be with him.
Maybe then we can hear what Jesus is calling us to leave behind to follow him.
