Under Jewish law a person who had leprosy could not approach another person without warning them he was coming. Lepers were outcasts of society. They were driven from their homes and left to fend for themselves. Therefore when the leper approached Jesus in today’s gospel he was taking a huge risk.

What the leper did was something quite remarkable. He approached Jesus humbly and with a confident faith that he would be healed. Jesus not only healed him, but he also demonstrated God’s love and mercy in a way more eloquent than words could ever express. He touched the man and made him well, not just physically, but spiritually as well.

How do we approach people who are difficult to love or are shunned by society because of a some sort of defect ? Do we show them kindness and mercy the way that Jesus did ?
Jesus is always ready to show us his mercy and free us from whatever makes us unclean, unapproachable, or unloving toward others. His love is the core healing we all need and desire. His love will heal us in ways we can’t even imagine !
