Our Gospel today from Matthew 19:16-22 is the story of the rich young man. The man asks Jesus what he has to do to have eternal life. Jesus tells him to sell what he has, give the money to the poor and then follow him. We know that the man couldn’t do it and went away sad. Jesus wanted this man to find true happiness and knew he would never find it in his possessions.
This was a good man. He obeyed the commandments. He followed the rules. But his possessions were more important to him than his relationship with Jesus. The thoughts and energy required to accumulate and maintain his possessions distracted him from living a life of putting God first. To truly follow Jesus, we must be free of things that are stopping us. This is often the tension in our lives. If we want to be a pilgrim instead of a tourist, we need to have the courage to get rid of whatever is an obstacle to a full response to God’s call.
What are the obstacles in our lives? It could be our possessions, but it could also be our job, our friends, our interests. We can be trapped in the endless pursuit of things which can take all of our attention away from God, like the rich young man. The world tries to convince us that we will find happiness in our possessions. If Jesus is the most important thing in our life, are we brave enough to give up what the world considers happiness to pursue the only thing that will ever make us truly happy, which is Jesus!
