Our gospel today Mark 3:13-19, Jesus “went up the mountain and summoned those whom he wanted” to be his disciples. The mountain represented a quiet place away from the crowds that were surrounding him, and also a mountain top encounter, where God commissioned many for their missions in our Old Testament history.
The significance of this scripture is that Jesus calls them to him for an intimate encounter first, before he gives them the authority and sends them out for their mission. This is the way it must be for us as well. We must be with him and have this intimate encounter with Jesus first, before we will ever be successful on his mission. For some people, their mountain top encounter is in quiet prayer or adoration, for others it is in serving those in need. It can be in quiet solitude out in nature, or it can be on a retreat like a Cursillo.
This is never a “one and done” event for us. The key to accomplishing his mission for us is to keep coming back to Jesus for that intimate encounter, so we can hear his call, and go forth with authority to accomplish his mission.
