Today we end the Christmas season and begin Ordinary Time with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. All four gospels describe his baptism by John as a powerful experience of God’s love and an outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon him. When Jesus returned home from his baptism, he was different. His life was never the same after that.

I too am called to be a child of God. The Spirit is within me. God’s hand and love are there. In my baptism, God had lovingly embraced me and given me a mission. Like Jesus, I have been specially chosen and clearly sent to serve others.

I may not remember the day of my baptism especially if I was a baby. Yet I need to think more deeply about the effect of my own baptism on my life. Am I doing what God has chosen for me to do ? Am I the face of Christ for those I meet ? Is my family and place of work more holy because of me ?

Welcome to ordinary time.
