Jesus tells his apostles to travel light. Life is too short to be weighed down with excess baggage. The reason for traveling light is not because these things are evil or because I’m suppose to have some sort of pious discomfort with material things. A religion that believes in a God who became flesh and blood cannot have a negative attitude toward material things.
So why travel light ?
First, the accumulation of things or what like to call “stuff”, can get in the way with my relationship with people. Things are important, but people are always MORE important.
Second, concern for my stuff bogs me down. It takes a lot of time and energy to acquire and maintain all my stuff, eg: my car, my boat, my lawn.
I was created by God to grow, to move, to journey on the great adventure of life. The more stuff I pile up, the less I am able to move in that direction. The danger is, I become less of a traveler, and more of a tourist !
