In our Gospel today, Matthew 13:16-17, Jesus tells his disciples they are blessed because they could see and hear who Jesus really is, and this was revealed to them by the Father. He also comments that many prophets and righteous people longed to see and hear what the disciples had seen and heard but could not.
The righteous people had put expectations on the Messiah that he would free them from the oppression of the Romans and rid them of those in the margins of society, but that was not Jesus’ mission on earth.
Which group are we like, the disciples or the righteous? Do we put our own expectations on Jesus to act as we want him to, or are we blessed to know him and see him as he really is, and continue his mission on earth?
