In our Responsorial Psalm today we sing, “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.”

A large crowd of people were following Jesus, so he asks Phillip where they can buy enough food for all of them to eat. Phillip must have been thinking, you have got to be kidding Jesus, 200 days wages won’t feed this crowd. Jesus already knew what he was going to do, but he asked the question to see if they trusted in him. It was humanly impossible to solve this problem, so Jesus is checking to see if they would even consider a more divinely inspired option. When faced with difficulty, do we consider a divinely inspired option or merely trust our human options ?

The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs !

When they were finished, they filled twelve wicker baskets with the leftovers. That’s one basket for each apostle. A coincidence ? I don’t think so! Each basket was meant to show them to be generous in sharing what they have received from him. Every gift he gives us is not just for us but is meant to be shared. Jesus is always showering his gifts upon us. May we learn how to receive what he gives us and always be ready to offer these gifts to the people around us, especially the poor !

Remember: The hand of the Lord feeds is; he answers all our needs !

St. Joseph, pray for us !
