The widow in our Gospel today gave all that she had to live on and not from her surplus wealth. It makes us stop and think about how we give. Many times we feel like we are just barely making ends meet and that keeps us from giving to the Lord as much as we would like. Yet what about our time in service or the quality of the work we do for God ? Do we do the best we can do or just try to skate by ?

It reminds me of a story I heard several years ago.
A man spent his life working for a company that built houses. He was about to retire and was working on his last house. He reasoned that it didn’t matter what kind of job he did since this was his last house. They couldn’t fire him or penalize him. So he did a sloppy job, using low-grade materials, and doing lots of careless work. When he retired, the company gave him the house as a retirement present. Had he only known this was going to be his house, he would have done things much differently.

What kind of house are you building for yourself in heaven ? Do you give all that you have or only from your excess ? It will show in the quality of the work that you do !

St. Joseph, pray for us !
