Imagine how surprised people were to hear Jesus say; “You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world.” They must have felt he was talking to the wrong crowd. After all, they were farmers, fishermen, and carpenters. They were not scholars and lawyers or priests. They were simple folks. This speech must be for the folks living in the big city in Jerusalem. Yet Jesus knew full well what he was saying.

Even today we talk about the wonderful church we have where we give glory to God. We speak as if it’s the building that gives glory to God. Yet the truth is that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. As we say in Cursillo, united with the hierarchy, we are the church. Every time I go to Mass and receive him in the Eucharist, I give glory to God. I am blessed by God and he strengthens me with his body and blood.

The greatest way I give glory however is at the end of Mass, when I walk out that door, and take him into my world. When I leave that building, I am called to be salt and light. My friends, let us resolve to let our light shine before other so that they may see our good works and give glory to God.

Who is the church …….. ?
