One on the three disciplines of Lent is prayer along with fasting and alms giving. So why should I pray ? I don’t pray to flatter God, or to try to talk him into something. I pray because prayer affects me. It sets me in the right direction toward God.
Praying helps me realize that there is a God, that he loves me, and that the gifts he gives me are far beyond me. Existence, eternal life, forgiveness, are not things I can do for myself. They’re beyond me, and they’re gifts from God. When I pray, I realize that, and it points me in the right direction.
In golf, if you concentrate on where you want the ball to go, it sets everything in the right direction (well for me-most of the time). When the ball goes in the right direction, good things happen. That’s how prayer works. If I turn myself to God in prayer, it sets everything in the right direction and good things begin to happen.
