Happy St. Patrick’s Day ☘️.

Who deserves credit for successes I may have achieved in my life? This question was hotly debated at the time of the Protestant Reformation. The reformers emphasized that it was all God’s work and we can do nothing on our own. The Catholic side of the argument emphasized the importance of our participation. We need God’s help, but we have a very real part to play as well.

At different times, I may forget either side of that argument. The greatest danger however is to forget about God’s involvement and take all the credit for my success. I need to remember that God is a partner in the things I do whether great or small.

This Lent let us remember the fact that God is my partner. I need his help not just in moments of crisis, but in everyday events. Let us also reflect on the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel: “I cannot do anything on my own …. I do not seek my own will, but the will of the one who sent me.” The gospel reminds me, God has come to give me his help each and every day if I strive to do his will. Truly, His goodness is overflowing !

St. Joseph, pray for us !
