The Gospel of John reminds me that God sent his only Son so that I might have eternal life. God’s own life within me we also call grace. This is God’s life within me here on earth and the fullness of life to come in heaven.

After his encounter with Jesus, Nicodemus must have felt something different happening within him. God’s grace was starting to have an effect on him. In today’s gospel, at a gathering of the chief priests and Pharisees where they were talking about arresting Jesus, Nicodemus speaks up and says: “Does our law condemn a person before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?” God’s grace is continuing to work in him and change his heart.

What do I need to do this Lent to let God’s grace work in me ? At times it seems that the light Jesus spoke about isn’t really shining through me, but rather it seems more like a spotlight shining on me for others to see my good works. Christ’s light needs to shine through me so that HIS goodness and love can be known. Let us pray for God’s grace to work in me so that his light will shine through me in everything that I do. God’s grace can and will enlighten me as it did Nicodemus !

St. Joseph, pray for us !
